Pastoral Call Update: April 28, 2021

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Andrew Twietmeyer, who is currently concluding his studies for the pastoral ministry at Concordia Theological Seminary in Fort Wayne, Indiana, has been called to serve as pastor at Messiah Lutheran Church!
 

Pastor-Elect Twietmeyer received his call at CTSFW’s annual Candidate Call Day service, held on the evening of Tuesday, April 27. The call was issued by Messiah’s Voters Assembly through the Michigan District of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod, with the assignment made by the LCMS Council of Presidents.

Pastor-Elect Twietmeyer's hometown is Caledonia, Michigan. He, his wife Elizabeth and his two daughters are currently members of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Wittenberg, Wisconsin.

Pastor-Elect Twietmeyer will graduate from CTSFW on Friday, May 21st. We pray for God’s richest blessings on his final weeks of study, as well as his preparations for moving to Grand Rapids and his upcoming ordination and installation at Messiah. As the timetable and details for these blessed events come into focus, we will keep you posted!

Gracious Father, we thank You for hearing our prayers and granting us a shepherd, Andrew Twietmeyer, to guide us in the paths of righteousness. Help us to await with joy his arrival, and protect him in the coming days. Bless his ministry among us, and grant that we may ever be willing to hear the voice of Your servant speaking in Your name, so that he may joyfully carry out his ministry to Your glory and our welfare; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord. Amen.

Pastoral Call Update: April 24, 2021

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

We will have a pastor soon!!!

The Lutheran Church Missouri Synod's Council of Presidents has assigned Messiah a pastoral candidate from Concordia Theological Seminary in Fort Wayne, Indiana!

We will learn who our pastor-elect is (and he will learn where he will be serving) at the Seminary's Call Day service this Tuesday, April 27 at 7 pm.

The Call Day service at CTSFW is not open to the public, but will be livestreamed. You can watch the service on Facebook or the seminary's Daily Chapel page. For more information about Call Day 2021, visit https://callday.ctsfw.edu. You can also watch the service in Messiah's fellowship hall on Tuesday, April 27 at 7 pm, where we'll be hosting a live viewing party!

We'll inform you of further developments (information about our pastor-elect, his plans for coming to Messiah, and so forth) as we learn about them. The next milestone in the process after Call Day will be our pastor-elect's graduation from the Fort Wayne seminary on Friday, May 21. We thank our Circuit Visitor Rev. Jason Peterson, our Michigan District-LCMS President Rev. Dr. David Maier, and all on the district staff who helped with bringing this blessed event to pass!

Important April 25 Worship & News Update

IMPORTANT WORSHIP UPDATE
At their April meeting this past Monday, Messiah's Church Council ratified a change to our current Guidelines for In-Person Worship brought forward by the Board of Elders.  This change provides an exemption to our face coverings requirement for those who are medically unable to tolerate a face mask.  The Council also emphasized continued attention to social distancing throughout our time together at worship services.

The revised section of the Guidelines can be found just below; changes are emphasized in italics.  Click here for the complete revised document.

Precautions  
The following precautions are currently in place for in-person worship:

  • Please exercise personal discernment when it comes to your health. If you are feeling sick, waiting for COVID-19 test results, in recommended quarantine or isolation from COVID-19 exposure, in a high-risk category, or not comfortable or ready to attend in person, please stay home. Services will continue to be livestreamed as noted above.

  • You will be welcomed in person at the sanctuary door as you enter. All inner doors will be kept open.

  • To minimize potential spread of COVID-19 in this public setting, wearing of face coverings (fabric masks) are required at all services.

    • Those who are not medically able to tolerate a face mask are exempt from this requirement. We ask those who are medically exempt to wear a face covering to and from their seat in worship. (If you are not medically able to tolerate a face mask, face shields are an acceptable alternative.)

    • If you forget a face mask or don’t have one, please don’t let this keep you from attending; we will gladly provide you with one.

  • Please maintain minimum 6-foot social distancing before, during and after services.

    • To assure social distancing during worship, we strongly encourage advance RSVPs for all services. Sign-up options are available by phone, email and Internet. 26 seating spots for families or individuals are available in the nave of the sanctuary for each service. Additional seating space is available in the choir area and the narthex. Generally, more seating is available for the 8:30 am service than at 11 am.

    • Worshipers will sit on the opposite ends of alternate pews. Designated seating will be clearly marked for “8:30 (1st service)” or “11:00 (2nd service)”; other pew entrances will be roped off to assure social distancing.

    • Following announcements, dismissal by families will begin from the back of the church. Please continue to be mindful of social distancing as you greet others and exit. When weather permits, we encourage you to greet others outdoors!

Requirements for wearing face masks and maintaining social distancing continue to be in place for gatherings outside of worship, and for other building use.  Please be mindful of how, in this time of continued uncertainty, we can continue to love one another, bearing each other's burdens as Christ bore ours, looking to others' interests as well as to our own.  His Holy Spirit will give us the will and the ability to do so, whatever the difficulty!

NEWS UPDATE

Pastoral Call Update
At the April Council meeting, Pastor Peterson informed us that the LCMS Council of Presidents will finalize the assignments of seminary candidates at their next meeting on Saturday, April 24th. Very soon after that meeting, we should learn whether Messiah will receive a seminary candidate and (if so) what Call Day service we should pay attention to!

In-person attendance at Call Day services is limited due to the pandemic; both seminaries will livestream these services. As soon as we know more, we will update you with information, including an online link to watch the appropriate Call Day service. The Call Committee will also host a live viewing of the appropriate Call Day service in our fellowship hall. Again, watch for more details as soon as we know them!

This coming Sunday, our readings and hymns focus on Jesus as our Good Shepherd, who knows His sheep and laid down His life for them. As we rejoice in His care, may we fear no evil, even in the valley of the shadow of death. Out of the abundant life He gives us, may we love one another as He has loved us, and join Him in bringing others to His fold!

On April 18th, we will celebrate "Here I Stand" Sunday -- the 500th anniversary of Martin Luther's historic declaration to the Imperial Diet meeting at Worms, Germany.  Directed by the Holy Roman Emperor and other leaders to recant his teaching about the pure Gospel, Luther said, "I am bound by the Scriptures I have quoted and my conscience is captive to the Word of God. BREAKING NEWS

Trustees Spring Clean-Up
This annual event will be held this Saturday, April 17th from 8 am to 12 noon. The Board of Trustees will provide tools to do mostly outdoor projects and wash interior windows; they can also fit a job to whatever volunteers want to do. We'd love to have a great turnout and get our property ready for Vacation Bible School and other summer activities. Contact Carol Mushong or any Trustee for details!

LWML Spring Rally
The Lutheran Women's Missionary League Rapid Waters Zone will hold their Spring Rally on Saturday, April 24th from 9:30 am to 1:30 am at Bethel Lutheran Church in Howard City. Registration cost is$10, which includes continental breakfast and lunch. Pastor Richard Townes will be the key speaker, focusing on his time spent as a military chaplain. The Gifts from the Heart ingathering of personal care items for Helping Hands of Howard City will also be collected. As we anticipate learning whether we will receive a seminary candidate to serve as our pastor in the next couple of weeks, I encourage all of you to click here and read an article about our Synod's pastoral placement process. It helped me understand how many moving parts are involved, and also testifies to the care that those leading the process have for both the candidates and the congregations they'll be called to.

BREAKING NEWS

Pastoral Call Update
The Michigan District-LCMS has updated us regarding the timeline of our request for a seminary graduate. As mentioned in the April newsletter, Call Days (when graduating students learn the location where they will serve) will be Tuesday, April 27 (at Fort Wayne) and Wednesday, April 28 (at St. Louis). The District will officially learn if we will receive a candidate sometime the week before Call Days, and will notify us once they know. If that comes to pass, the Call Committee is planning to organize a livestream viewing of Call Days, so that we would learn that graduate's identity at the same time he learns where he's going!

Messiah's April newsletter is in the U.S. mail as of now. Click here to view or download this newsletter and our April calendars online.

The cost of mailing Messiah’s monthly newsletter doubled starting in January 2021! Wanting to make continued good use of the resources you’ve entrusted to us, the Church Council decided at its March meeting to change newsletter distribution as follows:

  • Beginning with the June 2021 issue, paper copies of the newsletter will be available for members at the Welcome Center. We will continue to mail the newsletter to homebound members.

  • We will also continue to post the newsletter online at www.messiahgr.org/news. As in this email, we will include a direct link to each new newsletter in the update sent out closest to publication.

  • If you are not currently able to attend worship (due to the pandemic or for other reasons) and want to continue receiving the newsletter after May, please contact Sandy Goodlander to make arrangements.

A Prayer for a Time of Waiting

O Lord, give us an abiding trust in Your good will, that no impatience or suffering of mind or body may weaken our faith in You. Teach us to say, “Thy will be done,” and to accept Your holy and gracious will in all things. Out of the shadows of our doubts and fears, bring the light of Your great mercy toward us.

Through Word and Spirit You both enlighten the minds and sanctify the lives of those whom You draw to Your service. Look with favor on the seminaries of the Church, blessing those who teach and those who learn, especially those men completing their studies for the pastoral ministry. Bless also all district presidents and seminary workers charged with placing graduates in congregations.

Send us the pastor you have chosen for us, according to Your will and in your time, that by the teaching and preaching of Your Word all the baptized at Messiah may grow in Your grace and wisdom, apply themselves with ready diligence to daily life and faithfully fulfill their service to You and to their neighbors, according to Your will; through Your Son Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

Pastoral Call Update & March 3 Lenten worship

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Pastoral Call Update
The Rev. Martin Kaufmann has declined our call to serve as pastor at Messiah. An excerpt from his letter to us follows below.

"After much prayer, consultation, and personal reflection, I have made the decision to stay at my present Call here at Trinity, Auburn, and to return your Call. This was a difficult decision. I recognize your need for a pastor and feel my gifts would serve you well. However, the ministry needs here at Trinity are just as great, very similar, in fact, and coupled with family considerations, I feel it best to stay at my present Call."

"May the Lord continue to guide your congregation as it seeks to find a full-time pastor. I have every confidence that the Lord will bring you together with the right man to serve as your pastor when the time comes. God’s timing is always the best. May He grant you patience and endurance until that time is fulfilled."

We thank Pastor Kaufmann for his prayerful consideration of our call. We pray for God's blessings on him, his family, and those he currently serves at Trinity Lutheran Church in Auburn, Illinois.

At this point, we are pausing our call process as the Michigan District submits our request for a seminary graduate to Synod. Pastoral Call Days at our two seminaries will be held on Tuesday & Wednesday, April 27-28. Please pray that God will bless all the men completing their studies at our St. Louis and Fort Wayne seminaries, and that He will bless the deliberations of Synod's district presidents (including Michigan District President Maier) as they work to place new graduates. I ask that all of you also continue to keep our Church Council, call committee, staff and membership in your prayers as we go forward.

Sunday School Resumes February 21
At their February meeting, Messiah's Church Council approved the resumption of Sunday School for children in preschool through grade 2, beginning this Sunday, February 21 at 9:45 am.  In the weeks to come, children will see how God Protects His People in Egypt and the Exodus.

Pastoral Call Update
Pastor Martin Kaufmann will be meeting with Messiah's leaders by remote online access this coming Sunday, February 21 at 7 pm.  This will be Pastor Kaufmann's first opportunity to learn more about us and our congregational life.  If you have questions or suggestions, please contact our Call Committee chairman Mark Altemann before Sunday night.


News Update

  • At their February meeting, the Church Council chose Rev. Steven and Martha Mahlburg to receive our ongoing international mission support. The Mahlburgs are currently serving with the Ceylon Evangelical Lutheran Church in Sri Lanka.   • For this year, the Council designated proceeds of Lenten coin folders for Messiah's Future Church Workers Scholarship Fund. This fund supports Messiah members studying for full-time church work at Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod colleges, universities and seminaries. Coin folders are available for your use at Messiah's Welcome Center.

As Lent begins, I pray that we may all cleanse our hearts through repentance, prayer, fasting and almsgiving; that during these 40 days we may prepare with joy for the feast of Easter; that our heavenly Father may renew our zeal in faith and life; and that we may always be given the fullness of divine grace, the gift that belongs to us as children of God in Jesus Christ!

Pastoral Call Update: February 15, 2021

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

At Messiah's special voters meeting held on Sunday, February 7, the assembly unanimously voted to call the Rev. Martin Kaufmann to serve as our next pastor. Rev. Kaufmann currently serves Trinity Lutheran Church in Auburn, Illinois.

After the meeting, we spoke with Pastor Kaufmann by phone and sent him the official call documents (along with further information about Messiah and the Grand Rapids area). Pastor Kaufmann has replied as follows:

“Greetings in the name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. I am humbled to have received the Divine Call to serve as your pastor, and am grateful for the opportunity to consider how my gifts may best serve the kingdom of God. I have received your materials and look forward to learning more about your congregation. As I prayerfully consider this Call to serve as your undershepherd, I ask that you keep me, my family, and our congregations in our prayers, as you will be in mine. The Lord bless us all as we seek to serve Him in His kingdom.”

We'll inform you of further developments as they occur. In the meantime, our Lutheran Service Book provides us with a model for the prayers that Pastor Kaufmann has requested:

Lord Jesus Christ, You instituted the office of the public ministry and instructed Your Church to call ministers of Your Word. Having prayed for the guidance of Your Holy Spirit, we have called a pastor, the Rev. Martin Kaufmann, to proclaim Your saving Gospel among us. Assist him to recognize the needs of this congregation and the welfare of Your kingdom and, if it be Your will, grant that he accept the call to serve among us. Hear us for Your own sake, as You live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

  • To minimize potential spread of COVID-19 in this public setting, wearing of face coverings (fabric masks) is required at all services, from when you enter the building to when you leave.  If you forget a face mask or don’t have one, please don’t let this keep you from attending; we will gladly provide you with one.

  • Worshipers will sit on the opposite ends of alternate pews.  Designated seating will be clearly marked for “8:30 (1st service)” or “11:00 (2nd service)”; other pew entrances will be roped off to assure social distancing.

  • Following announcements, dismissal by families will begin from the back of the church.  Please be mindful of social distancing as you greet others and exit.

In Closing
Despite what Peter wanted, neither Jesus nor His disciples could remain on the mountaintop.  After His glorious transfiguration, Jesus set His face toward Jerusalem, where He would die to pay for the sins of the world.  And His disciples followed Him -- many times, reluctantly or haltingly, through the pitfalls of betrayal, false witness and denial.  Even on the other side of Easter, Christ's followers faced rejection, persecution, and countless other hardships as they proclaimed the good news of His salvation to all within their reach.  What sustained the disciples as they followed?  

Brothers and sisters at Messiah, my prayer for the days to come is that what sustained the early Christians may sustain us, that we may be strengthened in our faith and our daily walk by the power of God's Word and Sacraments.  As we wait for further developments regarding our current pastoral call, for an end to the COVID-19 pandemic, for the relief of whatever personal burdens we may carry, let us continue to trust in the mercy of our loving Lord and daily return to Him, believing His promises to us, all confirmed in the life, death and resurrection of His Son Jesus Christ!

Special Voters Meeting Sunday, February 7
As announced and shared last Sunday (click here for the complete message), there will be a Special Voters Meeting after the 11 am service on February 7.  At this meeting we will consider our Call Committee's latest recommendations, based on the past week's round of interviews with candidates from our new call list.  

Again, we encourage you to RSVP as above if you plan to attend the Special Voters Meeting (there's a checkbox for this purpose on our website's February 7 RSVP form).  We will work to accommodate as many attenders as possible while maintaining social distancing as follows:

  • For those who do not attend the 11 am service, we will use any designated spaces in the sanctuary, choir loft and narthex not used for that service.

  • We will also livestream the meeting to overflow seating in the church foyer and the fellowship hall. Members of the Call Committee will be available to take questions and gather ballots from those in overflow seating.

  • Throughout Sunday's services and the Voters Meeting, please continue to be mindful of social distancing as you participate and greet others.

Finally, as we look ahead to this Sunday, we turn to our Lord in prayer for His strength and support:

O Gracious Father, You led Your holy apostles to ordain ministers for the proclamation of Your Word and the faithful administration of the Sacraments of Christ. Pastoral Call Meeting: Sunday, February 7.

Dear Brothers and Sisters at Messiah,

A Special Voters meeting will be held on Sunday, February 7, 2021 immediately following Messiah's 11 am service.

The purpose of the meeting is to consider our pastoral Call Committee’s latest recommendations.

Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, special arrangements will be made to conduct this meeting in as safe and prudent a manner as possible. Please contact one of us directly for further details.

The Call Committee will present recommendations based on their recent interviews of pastors on our latest call list. We will discuss these recommendations before considering any official action.

All adult members are encouraged to attend and join in our discussions and decisions, as we continue with this important process. Your input is valued to make this meeting’s decisions representative of our congregation.

Pastoral Call Process Update
Pastor Peterson received our latest pastoral call list on Monday.  Our Call Committee will meet remotely on Thursday evening to review the information from Synod and decide on a path forward.  With the possibility of a seminary graduate also in the picture, look for further information on our next steps in the near future!
 

Worship for Sunday, January 31
Our worship services for Sunday, January 31, the 4th Sunday after the Epiphany of our Lord, will be led by Pastor Dieter Haupt.   There will be two identical services at 8:30 and 11 am. (The 11 am service will also be livestreamed at www.tinyurl.com/messiahgryoutube.)  

It helps us prepare well and ensure social distancing when you let us know you're planning to attend.  You can RSVP by calling or emailing the church office (616-363-2553, goodlans@messiahgr.org) or by clicking here to sign up.  Plenty of spaces are available for both services.

A reminder that the following precautions are currently in place for in-person worship:

  • Please exercise personal discernment when it comes to your health.  If you are feeling sick, waiting for COVID-19 test results, in recommended quarantine or isolation from COVID-19 exposure, in a high-risk category, or not comfortable or ready to attend in person, please stay home.  

  • To minimize potential spread of COVID-19 in this public setting, wearing of face coverings (fabric masks) is required at all services, from when you enter the building to when you leave.  If you forget a face mask or don’t have one, please don’t let this keep you from attending; we will gladly provide you with one.

  • Worshipers will sit on the opposite ends of alternate pews.  Designated seating will be clearly marked for “8:30 (1st service)” or “11:00 (2nd service)”; other pew entrances will be roped off to assure social distancing.

  • Following announcements, dismissal by families will begin from the back of the church.  Please be mindful of social distancing as you greet others and exit.

If you want to receive Holy Communion, but do not feel comfortable attending these services, please call (734-645-4353) or email (revjpeterson@yahoo.com) our vacancy pastor, Rev. Jason Peterson, to make arrangements to receive the Lord's Supper by individual weekday appointment, either at the church, at home, or another location that meets your needs. 

General guidelines for sanitation and other current practices (complete service bulletins, simplified giving of offerings, Holy Communion protocols, nursery and kitchen closures, restroom availability, post-service sanitizing) remain in effect.  Click here to see the most recent version of our current worship guidelines.
 

This coming Sunday, we see that Jesus’ authority is unmistakable.  He is the prophet foretold, who will speak the word of truth. (Deuteronomy 18:15-20)  This holy Word of truth in Jesus commands, restrains and rebukes evil spirits.  Divine wisdom and action in Christ have authority over the knowledge of men. (Mark 1:21-28)  It is He alone who builds up people in everlasting love.  We can only boast that Jesus loves us because we are fully known by God.  By His authority, our weakness are cared for and our sins forgiven. (1 Corinthians 8:1-13) 

And in His name, the people of Messiah Lutheran Church & Preschool are sent to serve -- not just during Lutheran Schools Week, but always!  In the coming days, may God's Word & Sacraments strengthen your faith and empower your service to your neighbors!

Bible Study Update: In Person and Online
At their January meeting, Messiah's Church Council approved the resumption of in-person small group Bible studies, effective immediately.  Click here to read a detailed message from Messiah's new president, Dave Ahrens.

LifeLight Bible studies are now being held on Tuesday mornings at 10:30 am, Wednesday evenings at 6 pm and Sunday mornings at 9:45 am.  Please contact study leaders Shirley Hoese (Tuesday), Dan Bohlinger (Wednesday) and Randy Gerke (Sunday) for details about topics.  Also, please note that masks and social distancing are required for these studies. Sunday School remains closed, and regular board meetings will continue to be held online for now.

Preschool Update
Enrollment for the 2021-2022 year at Messiah Lutheran Preschool is now open.  Do you know any children in the area between 3 to 5 years old?  We would love to invite their parents or caregivers to attend our Open House this coming Tuesday, January 26th from 6:00-7:30 pm.  Due to COVID-19 this is a RSVP-only event with 20 time slots available.  Please contact preschool director Vonda Smestad at 616-363-2553 or smestadv@messiahgr.org for more information or to register.  Just a reminder: Messiah members receive a 50% tuition discount for Preschool.


Pastoral Call Process Update
At the January Council meeting, Pastor Peterson informed us that our new pastoral call list is close to being in our hands, hopefully by the end of this week.  Please pray for our Call Committee as they move into action once again to review information from Synod and interview candidates.  With the possibility of a seminary graduate also in the picture, the Committee and Council hope to expedite the process and have further information for us as soon as possible.


In closing, the core message of Holy Scripture, "Repent and believe the Gospel" is the refrain for this coming Sunday. The people of Nineveh, in garments of mourning, turn away from evil; in response, God turns away from judgment. (Jonah 3:1-5, 10) Jesus preaches the same thing; repent & believe! (Mark 1:14-20) Turning away from all sin, worldly distraction & even daily labor is difficult.  And yet, we must be aware of the urgency to leave all things behind & follow Jesus, for the kingdom of God is near and time is short.  (1 Corinthians 7:29-35).  Liberated from sin to freely serve our neighbor, may we see how all of us are connected in the body of Christ, and how those who seem invisible to us are truly indispensable!  (1 Corinthians 12:12-26)

A Message from Messiah's President

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

“We rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope.” (Romans 5:3-4)

“Holy Spirit, bring comfort to us in our sufferings in Jesus’ name” (Portals of Prayer, Thursday January 14th)

I am writing to update you on decisions regarding building and mask use that have been made by our Board of Elders and Church Council, as well as providing background on these decisions. These issues have become somewhat contentious among many in the congregation. I have heard from some of you regarding your concerns, and your opinions on the subject have been heard by the Council, which discussed these issues extensively at our January meeting.

In their regular reviews of conducting worship during the COVID-19 pandemic, the Elders have referred to the state of Michigan’s executive orders and Emergency Epidemic Orders, which since May 2020 have consistently recognized our First Amendment freedom of religious worship and exempted congregations and worshipers from penalty. The area of Bible studies and meetings under these orders has been more challenging to navigate. Some LCMS churches in the area have interpreted the orders to regularly allow Bible studies and meetings in their facilities; generally, Messiah has pursued a more cautious approach, based on the situation and the guidelines in effect. State guidelines have changed in response to the current state of the pandemic; this is why we held LifeLight and Sunday School classes in the fall, but canceled them when restrictions on indoor gatherings were tightened in November.

Following two months of Messiah’s building being open only for worship, preschool classes (which operate with strict precautions under different state guidelines) and other core functions, the Council has heard and understands the frustrations of not being able to use our facilities for members to grow in God’s Word and strengthen each other in faith. At the January meeting, Council approved the start of winter LifeLight classes on Tuesday mornings at 10:30 am, Wednesday evenings at 6:00 pm and Sunday mornings at 9:45 am, effective immediately. Masks and social distancing are required for these studies. Sunday School remains closed and regular board meetings will continue to be held online for now.

Regarding mask use during worship services: The Board of Elders has regularly deliberated on this subject at length, over the course of many months. The decision was influenced by occasions of people in attendance at worship in November, who had subsequent positive COVID results and illnesses. At their December meeting, the Elders decided that for the safety of our members, guests and others who attend, we would take all reasonable precautions to protect our members from the virus while still offering in person worship. Unfortunately, when we worship it is also a scenario that carries an increased risk of spreading any virus. We are sitting in an area for over an hour and also singing, which expels more air than speech or just attending a gathering. The CDC has determined that masks significantly reduce the spread of the virus when both parties are wearing them.

In order to also ensure social distancing (which had become a challenge in October and November’s worship services due to increased attendance), the Elders also reinstated a RSVP system that had been used when we worshiped outdoors during the summer months. Knowing how many will attend a service beforehand helps us with preparations such as printing worship folders, setting up Holy Communion, making sure we have enough elders and ushers, etc. It would also help us plan ahead if attendance grows beyond our current socially-distanced capacity. (This hasn’t happened yet; plenty of spaces currently remain available for each Sunday morning service.)

Finally, I would like to give my opinion on how we as a congregation should think about these decisions. Everyone will not agree with what has been decided. These kinds of disagreements are always going to be the case for any group of people. My prayer is that you will grant those in leadership God’s grace in these matters and not allow Satan to tear our congregation apart. I view our congregation as a family. Families don’t always agree but they should forgive and be able to love one another despite their differences. Messiah has endured a difficult and long pastoral vacancy and now we have been dealing with an unprecedented health crisis. We need to draw close to one another in this time through prayer and communication as best we can and bear this suffering together. I pray that soon we will be able to enjoy many of the things we miss as much as a congregation. I long for the time we can again embrace one another, study with one another in person on a more regular basis, and enjoy meals together.

“We know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.” (Romans 8:28) May He continue His work through these decisions, and may we continue to trust in His faithful promises!
